"The political communication systems of mature representative democracies are constantly evolving, but there is a sense that in the last twenty years or so, many have undergone a fundamental change - a "paradigmatic shift" as some have called it [...]. In simple terms, the global process of modernization, variously described by social theorists [...], had impacted on each of the components of national political communication systems, unleashing in its wake a series of reactions and counter-reactions. These once stable national systems, which caracterized much of the twentieth century, are increasingly becoming ones that have been described variously as "turbulent, less predictable, less structured" [...]. The relationships between political advocates, media professionals and their audiences have been transformed, as institutions and actors have sought to adapt to the new realities of political communication; such adjustments have in turn had implications for the wellbeing of democracy."

(James Stanyer, Modern Political Communication).
